I am planning to travel to Oz in Sept and have planned to bring a tent and do some backpacking. I am also going alone in hopes of meeting people that would want to do this also. But it seems like most people stay in hostels in cities. Will I be able to find people that are interested in backpacking through the country for a week or so? I do intend to spend some time in cities and hostels, but wanted the outdoor experience also.
This is important because I don't want to lug around a tent, camp stove, fuel, trekking poles, etc. unless I will be able to use it.
I appreciate any insight that can be thrown my way.
If you can, I would advise to get a vehicle, this way you can easily visit national parks or camp grounds, best bet is to have one you can sleep in when not near camping area.
You can find companions throught sites like this one or by spending some time in hostels meeting potential outdoors people. Unfortunately most people that like to hang in the cities are not as likely to be into sleeping in a tent !!
If you arrive in Sydney there's heaps of people going into the blue mountains, some of them have bought or hired a car and want to share fuel costs, other take a train. You can find those people going into sydney's backpackers (hostels) and read the notes people are hanging on the wall.
hi! me and my boyf arrive in oz in sept and we're planning on camping! where abouts u going first? we arrive in sydney first and ive heard there's not many places to camp in the cities but there's places nearby, they might just be a bus ride away. Our plan is to spend the first 2 wks in a hostel then to find a campsite for after that. Let me know if you find anything!
