We are arriving in Bangkok on the 14th of June 07 and are going to be spending 3 months travelling south to Singapore.I just wanted to get your opinions on the best way to travel through Thailand whether it be by bus or train and whether or not you should pre book ie coach tickets.
Also we were hoping to visit Phuket. Is this possible to do by road or do you need to get a ferry or plane.I know it is an island but have heard it is connected to the mainland by a bridge.
Any help or advice you could give would be very much appreciated:)

Ric,
With 3 months, you certainly have plenty of time to explore Thailand & Malaysia. I would recommend taking the gov't buses in every city. The travel agents will steer you to their mini vans or buses. These are private companies and sometimes are not as well mantained or as safe as the gov't buses. I vote bus over trains. There is more flexibility on scheduling and are cheaper.

Yes, you can arrive in Phuket via road. However, I recommend that you visit Krabi first. This is the prettiest part of Thailand, IMO. You can island hop once in Krabi. There are literally hundreds of islands to choose from. Then ferry over to Koh Phi Phi, then over to Phuket. I have some photos in my gallery of this area. Good luck on your adventure.

Cheers for that Mike.I had a look at your photos.Think they have just convinced me to do a bit of island hopping before I go to Phuket.
Cheers for the advice on transport aswell.Think we are going to take it and use the govnmt buses.
Many thanks:)

Yes krabi and the Phi Phi islands especially phi phi don is the most beautiful place in the world.

if your a diver then the diving around her is amazing to. Loads of dive shops on Phi Phi don. If you were a fan of the film ''the beach'' you can go to maya bay where that was filmed.

i travelled by busses and overnight trains when travelling thailand/malaysia....no complaints at all.

When u arrive bangkok check out Khao san Road you'll be spoilt for choice of ways to travel and places you can book.

if you'r thinking of flying internally at all then ''air asia'' are a great airline....so cheap.

I am very interested in diving.I have got my open water cert already.I have heard the sea is pretty rough though in June,July time which is when I will be there. Is there any opportunity to do diving at this time?
Also how cheap is cheap when talking about taking the buses in Thailand.
Cheers:)
