Hoping to do a 3 month road trip in usa next year. The most cost effective way of doing it that I can think of would be to buy a van and use this for transport and accommodation. My question is, is possible to legally purchase a vehicle and get insurnace if I am from Europe and do not have a residence in the usa? I have heard that if you are not resident and do not have a social security number then you cant purchase a vehicle.
If this is the case then does the same apply for Canada and Mexico? I intend to do some travelling there also so would it be possible to buy and insure a vehicle over there and drive it in the states?
Any ideas or advice on this would be appreciated.

I have researched this for a British citizen a few months ago. In Nevada, yes you can buy a van. Have your International Drivers License with you, the dealer will sell you a van, arrange the insurance and get the license plates on the vehicle. Not that difficult.

A van is a great choice for touring the US. You have your bed with you at all times. This is really handy when you hit the National Parks.
Have a great trip.

is nevada the only stae in which this is possible. Are there any companies you would recommend in turms of insurance? So if i turn up with an international driving license this is a highly viable option?

Each state has its own laws, but I doubt they vary much on selling cars. Bring your IDL and call a few dealers once in the US. I was told 'Progressive Insurance' is used freqently as they do a month to month policy. A cheaper option is to get a 6 month policy, cancel it when you are through with the van. They rebate the difference. Other companies are similiar. The auto dealer will provide several insurance options.

US insurance is not valid in Mexico. Many companies will provide insurance when you go into Mexico. Most companies allow you to go into Canada under your US policy.

Send me a PM if you have any more questions.
