About to buy tickets but have been humming and hawing for a week now. Right now I have arranged to fly into phuket from oz and then trapse around SEA(my outward ticket is in Vietnam). Wondering about the plausibility of overland travel into Malaysia. Right now if overland travel is plausible it is way cheaper than to fly.
Any advice appreciated!

Airasia have currently got a promotion on for a million free flight tickets and they're based in Malaysia so depending on when you want to travel you might be able to get a Bangkok to Malaysia flight for free (just pay the taxes).

Even if the free flights don't correspond with when you want to travel they're still totally cheap. I got a return flight to Kota Kinabalu plus an internal flight in Borneo for eighty pounds.

Theyre ace mate.

The other day i booked flights:

Bangkok to phuket
Phuket to kualr lumpar
kular lumpar to penang (return)

Altogether cost me €93 :-)

Yep, there's no problem with travelling overland between Phuket and Malaysia - and it would be comparatively cheap - but it is almost definitely cheaper to fly into Malaysia with Air Asia.

Personally I think it's more fun (and more environmentally sound) to go overland but if cost is your thing then fly.

One point to note as well is that you will generally get more time in malaysia if you fly in than if you go via one of the land-based border controls. I got 90 days when I flew into Kota Kinabalu but I'd heard that people that got the bus/boat into Malaysia only got 60.

Air Asia is brilliant - cannot fault them!

From Phuket, you can get a boat/bus to Trang, then a bus to Hat Yai (near the boarder) and then a bus from Hat Yai to Malaysia (Penang/KL). It costs around 800 Baht to Penang and there are no border fees (actually, 10 Baht, if you can count that!!). Takes around 10 hours. I got a 90 day stamp. Any travel agent will be able to book it for you a day in advance.
