Every doctor knowledgable in travel medicine will absolutely recommend anti-malarials.

Thats NOT trough!
I know more than one doctor and lots of pharmaciest which would say what I did!
This drugs are quite bad for your body, its bossible to be weak and tired and maybe to become easyer sik of something else.

Anyway do what you think its the best, but to die because of malaria in SEAsia is not as likely as to get a traffic accident.

safe trip...

It may not be "true" that all doctors recommend anti-malarials-I should clarify and say that all "knowledgable" or "experienced " doctors do.. I know this because I am one.. and any who don't recommend anti-malarials are just plain wrong!!
There are tons of resources online including the WHO and CDC if you want to look up formal recommendations.
And the treatments are not "bad " for your body or dangerous or make you sick- like any pill there are potential side effects but when you weigh the pros and the cons it is not even close!!!

G-trotter -- posts like yours that spread mistruths and misinformation do a nothing but harm and may be dangerous if anyone actually believes you-- Stick to things you know about.... and stay away from the doctors you are talking to while you are at it.. and don't get me started on getting anti-malarial advice from a pharmacist....
