In the 2+ years I travelled in Australia and New Zealand I went swimming... *thinks back to make certain* ...exactly zero times. I really don't think this is something that should worry you. :)

It wont spoil your trip at all, it will just limit a tiny bit of your trip that probably wouldn't interest you anyway. If you went on the great barrier reef, well about the best you could hope for without swimming is going out on one of the glass bottom boats to see the tropical fish. Almost everywhere else swimming or getting in the ocean water isn't really of importance.

In fact, it's even possible to do a diving-type ocean walk thingy on the barrier reef, even if you can't swim! So you wouldn't even miss out on that.

Sean, you'd be surprised how many other people can't swim or are really uncomfortable around water. Its not uncommon, and you should still be able to enjoy your rip. Seasickness is probably a worse problem!

If it helps just a little bit, you could look into adult swimming lessons, before you go, it might just be enough to give you a little confidence. It probably won't make you a brilliant swimmer, but it might allow you to have a bit more fun messing around at the beach or in the pool. You'd still have to be careful about going out of your depth etc, but its gorgeous cooling off the sea somewhere like thailand. I went snorkelling in Ko PhiPhi with a Thai girl who couldn't swim v well, and she wore a life jacket, and still had a great time.
