Hi,

I'm flying out to Australia by myself on Feb 5th and need to sort a hostel in Melbourne. Can anyone recommend any good places etc or good advice for a lone traveller as i'm beginning to freak out!!!!!

Cheers,

Katie

You don't say what type of hostel you're looking for (recommendations for a "party-hostel" would differ a lot from a quiet one), but my personal favorite is the Melbourne Oasis YHA. It's a bit further out of the city center (but has a tramstop right next door, so you're still in the CBD inside 10 minutes), a very nice and relaxed atmosphere, loads and loads of twin rooms (for less than the price of a four-bed dorm in the other YHA), as well as some regular dorms that, for Melbourne standards, are quite cheap, and is set in a very green and leafy area of Melbourne. I can particularly recommend a walk in the nearby Royal Park at dusk, as the rainbow lorikeets go absolutely crazy around that time of the day. Good for socializing and meeting people in the lounge, and getting a decent night's rest. (Aka, not a party hostel.)

Stay in Greenhouse Backpackers near Flinders St station. Just left 19th Dec! Think its $25 and I was on my own, but not for long. Included in that was free big breakfast on Thurs morning, BBQ on roof Tues night, Pancakes on Sunday morning, $3 pub crawl Thurs night, free tour Monday, etc. Perfect location, friendly, comfortable and drunken nights on the roof!!!

I stayed at this place - it was cosy and clean, and centrally located:

I also stayed at Base backpackers in St Kilda which is a bit more of a party place.

hope this helps.

If you want a pretty sociable hostel which is probably a pretty good initial stop if you are coming on a working holiday visa, All Nations Backpackers may be worth a try, but it is a little on the dirty side so if cleanliness is a 100% neccesity than it'd be best to avoid the place.

i can only recommend x base in st kilda. it is clean and in the perfect location close toi the beach and only 20min by tram to city centre...little pricey around $30 a night but still a good place. they have a special girl's only wing too.

Stayed at the The Beach Hostel Beaconsfield Road - nice clean small hostel near Albert Park & Tram 1 stops literally right outside the front door - great area - beach opposite, pub below, lots of restaurants (lots BYO & no corkage charge) and cafes along the street too. Rooms are fine bed, locker, wardrobe mirror, and shower rooms clean and really good showers with lots of hot water. We had a double room (bunk beds) costing AU$50 a night (that was over Christmas Day).

I am staying in St Kilda which is great and you can get a tram/train/bus ticket for $29 dollars for the week. I'm at the Oslo Hotel for backpackers which is cheap and functional and thats about it! I've heard Back of Chapel in Windsor is very nice. Good luck, melbourne is fab
