i know this is probably WAY too late for yourself, but for future reference, or for anyone that reads this thread, my hubby and i stayed at the Wanderer's Inn on the Upper East Side Dec 06, and it was heaps cheap (private and dorms available), and close to central park and 96th st subway station. We used hostelbookers.com for all of our accomodation in america and europe; i would totally recommend it.

I stayed at the Portland Square Hotel which was really a hostel because it was shared facilities, but it didn't have a kitchen. I think the price was ok for NYC, it was a few blocks from Central Park and really close to Times Square. There was a subway station at the end of the street. However, it was also dark and dingy and the rooms were really tiny, but this was what we expected really. It seemed pretty safe and we never had any problems.

We were there 5 nights and it was ok.

I always stay in Hotel 17: cheapest hotel I know of in the city (~$100/night for two people, shared bath), with a good location, clean rooms and bathrooms, classy decor, etc. If they're booked, they have a sister hotel as well.
