Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Trekking Tierra del Fuego/Patagonia, fuel questions...

I am planning a trip to South America starting in February including some camping in Tierra Del Fuego, and doing the W trek in Torres del Paine. I have never backpacked outside of the US, and was wondering what fuel supplies were available for cooking. I have a butane/propane canister driven stove, and was wondering if anyone who has travelled to either of those parks has seen butane fuel canisters at supply shops in nearby towns or if I should buy a multi-fuel stove (kerosene/gasonline) which I am sure I could find fuel for. Also is it easy to find replacement fuel tanks (msr for a multi-fuel stove) at either location should I not be able to take one on the plane to get to S.A.

A multi-fuel stove is ideal, but I believe that outdoor shops in Punta Arenas also sold butane cannisters. Can't tell for sure, though...

I went to Torres del Paine 15 days ago. In the nearest town, Puerto Natales, you´ll be able to find butane/ propane canisters without problem. You might also be able to find some at the refugios in the park (shelters) but they´ll surely be overpriced like everything is out there.
For your information there are 2 types of campsites in the park: the ones located near refugios with showers, bathrooms... for which you have to pay around 3500 CH pesos per person and the free ones which don´t have any facility.
Hope this helps!
