Me and my girlfriend are planning a trip to Greece in June. The plan is to go island hopping and stay in Athens for a weekend or so. I've been to Greece a couple of times before, but i was wondering if anyone had an island or two to reccomend. It would be appreciated.
Greece has almost 2000 islands, most of them unknown or "unexplored" by tourists. The point is what kind of islands would you like? Crowded, extreme night life, or the opposite? Maybe a combination. All the islands have wonderful sea and beaches to enjoy swimming. Help me to understand your preferences in order to suggest you the right place.
When I was in Greece, I only went to two islands: the usual, Santorini and Crete. Santorini is amazing, when you realize that civilization exists on the tip of a volcano...but it's very touristy. Pretty, though. Crete, it's kind of big..it has good beaches, and a good central city to port in... I don't know what you're planning to do on the islands, but if you went to Crete, go to a village called Mirtos. It's small, and has less tourists (or so it did a few years ago, by now maybe there's more...there's not much to see, though there's a long beach, with good water, a view and..that's it. You can have a piece of mind, basically...only the locals were there with some tourists when we were there (summer..Julyish). But it's been a few years, it may have changed. There's also a bigger village (a town?) next to Mirtos, with a few more options, which most people seemed to like. Both of these are situated in the south of Crete.
In either case, good luck and have fun!!
Totally agree with Christos. It really depends what you are looking for.
I was island hopping in Greece a few years ago and my favourite places were Astypalea and Amorgos.
Astypalea is the ideal place if you want to get away from it all. It is a remote and very quiet island with lovely little villages and rugged landscape.
Amorgos is also lovely. It is a little bit more touristy than Astypalea but more accessible and with better beaches. It also has very nice villages and an extensive network of mule paths (great for trekking!).
As Latarina said Santorini is nice but very very touristy.
Naxos is very touristy on the seaside and much more quiet and picturesque in the inside.
Have nice holidays
I have only been to one of the Greek Islands (Santorini), but that was a very beautiful place and very nice to visit.
We will be in the Isles in June as well. We are doing one week Santorini, 3 days Mykonos, 3 days Naxos. Thought we would hit 3 different styled Islands. Mykonos- party, Naxos-Chill, Santorini-Duh.
We are also staying in Athens 2 days, and before all this we will be in Amsterdam for 8 days then flying to Greece. Hope your trip goes well!
Hi there, and thanks for your answers. I know there's a lot of islands and a big variety of things to see and do. My point by asking for reccomendations was just to get feedback from people that have been to a place they really would advice people to go. We have a lot of time for planning, so i was just looking for some tips. We'll probably not decide the plans for the whole trip before we get down there anyway.
But we're not really looking for extreme nightife or the most touristy places. I do however still see Santorini as a must, i went there on a day trip once, and it was AMAZING!Besides that we don't really know where we wanna go(except Athens for a few days). We're just looking for places to chill, some nice scenery, a beautyful beach etc. I know you'll find those things a lot of places in Greece, but you cant go everywhere at once, thats why i was wondering if someone had any specific places to reccomend. But i know the trip will be great anyway. Someone sent me a good link on PM as well.
