Are there any other girls out there finding this a bit appalling that Joey's girlfriend is expected to take complete responsibility for contraception?! Not only does she have to take the pill, which increases chances of getting breast cancer, but is also now being discussed as a candidate for a diaphram! Also, not to sound too much like a nurse, relying on the pill in the first place is a really bad idea, especially if you're staying in hostels/camping etc, have you considered how many infections you might give her? (and I don't mean STI's, I just mean regular things yoiu get from not being able to shower every single day such as kidney infections and the like.)

So if you bite the bullet and just buy some condoms before you leave you could save her from trying to find a doctor whilst you're travelling (as well as the pain various infections bring) and antibiotics, which FYI stop the pill working completely.

I don't see anywhere in this thread that the discussion is about Joey's girlfriend being expected to take full responsibility for contraception. As consenting adults, it is both their responsibilties to make the decisions that best work for them, not ours. Also, the use of a diaphragm is not out of the realm of possibilities - again, something they need to decide upon.

The possibilities for infection are there with or without the use of condoms. Just to name one - placing a condom using unwashed hands can also be a source of infection.

So if you bite the bullet and just buy some condoms before you leave you could save her from trying to find a doctor whilst you're travelling (as well as the pain various infections bring) and antibiotics, which FYI stop the pill working completely.

FYI - check the research concerning the use of low-level (prophylactic) doxycycline and oral contraceptives. The number of women experiencing complete OC ineffectiveness is less than 1%.

Let's keep this thread on topic and not bring it to a debate about Joey and his girlfriend's choice of using OCs. Thank you.

pinkiegirlie,

i have to say i am absolutely astonished by your post.

i don't want to get into a lengthy debate about this subject at all but my girlfriend is currently on the pill (a decision that she managed to reach by herself without too much grief i hasten to add) and it seems that the effectiveness of this method of contraception will be reduced by anti-malarials.

therefore it seems that we will have to use condoms or another method.

i am perfectly happy to buy some condoms and take them with me for the time that we are in india.

i am also grateful to isadora for helpfully pointing out an alternative.

i can't see how at any point my girlfriend has been made to take full responsibility for contraception. i posted this thread asking about whether or not condoms were easily bought in india, not her. i only really wanted a yes or no answer as i remember having problems buying decent brands in rural parts of cambodia and laos last year.

and, finally, it is very much our decision and my intention with this post was merely to find out if condoms could be bought in india or not.

joey :)
