India is a place to avoid at all costs if you have young kids imho as it is a nightmarish place as it is without the added hassels of having young kids to run across roads safely as green lights mean go as do red lights, worry about monkies jumping off building and stealing food out of your kids mouth or hands etc. So to avoid your kids being road kill or harrassed by monkies it'd be best to avoid India while they are that little, or if India is on your must go to list definitely avoid the big cities at all costs like Mumbai, Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata etc. Bangkok and Hanoi/Vietnam are both places it'd be best to avoid with young kids. Most big cities in Asia are places to avoid with young kids because drivers in Asia wouldn't know how to drive safely if it meant saving their mothers life, they enjoy scaring the crap out of western tourits and trying to use them as speedhumps making them in to road kill. Naples/Italy is another to avoid with kids as it is a very dangerous city with not only really crap drivers, but also a lot of violence (being the murder capital of italy) and also very hectic. Rome is probably not the safest place for kids either with the drivers using pedestrians as speedhumps, but Rome is a very amazing city that anyone with an interest in history, nice architecture and fatty foods would love, but young kids aren't in to that yet.

I would think that little kids would like places like the Greek Islands, or some places up the East Coast of Australia where the weather is nice and they can run around without risking being run over by maniac drivers and go for a swim or paddle in the shallow waters on the lovely beaches. I guess it really all comes down to what the parents like though and trying to let the kids have a little enjoyment as well.

I think to get more help from people that is accurate to your situation, you'll need to be more specific as to what regions you are looking at going, if you have certain places in mind then people can say yes or no to them etc.

Have a great trip. You are very game to be travelling with little kids, I know I certinaly wouldn't do it!

Thanks for you thoughts. You have kind of confirmed my thinking on India as not being appropriate until they are much older. My tentative thoughts are that we will spend the majority of our trip in Australia and NZ given the kids ages.

The rough plan we went through last night was I have to say less RTW as more Australia and NZ. So basically :

5 nights - SE asia city
Brisbane to Adelaide overland taking 4 weeks (is this optimistic ?)
Flight to Uluru - 2/3 nights
Flight to Cairns - 7 nights
Auckland overland Christchurch - 4 - 5 weeks
Home via S Pacific and USA

That trip sounds like a pretty good one to have with young kids. The SEA City bit will probably be the hardest part of it, but as long as you are careful with where you choose it shouldn'e be too bad.

Have a great trip.
