Hello All,
I will be in Thailand for 3 weeks (I hope this is enough time) to tour most of the country.

Anyway after that I plan to visit Vietnam for 1 week - Saigon and Hanoi...I am wondering which city to fly into first and how long should I spend in each city - flying in from Bangkok.

Dont worry my stay in Vietnam can be extended to 10 days - 2 weeks.

I am very much so interested in seeing HaLong bay, and I am wondering if visiting Sapa is worth it? I'm not a huge fan of trekking. How far is Sapa from Hanoi city?

Also is there anything else to do and see?

Thank you
Mr. Gecko

Sounds like your trip is going to be too short to get everything you want in, unless your budget is no option and you can fly between every destination.

3 weeks in Thailand is probably not enough to tour most of the country and do it justice. I would choose either the beaches and islands of the south, or jungles and trekking in the north, both with a few days in Bangkok. I've been to Thailand a couple of times, once we spent two weeks just on Koh Samui and Koh Panang, and the second time 3 weeks on Koh Phi Phi - both times with a coupe of days in BKK. We are not beach bums either!

If you are keen to see Halong bay, then go to Hanoi first and what ever time you have left spend in Saigon - a great city by the way. The Cu Chi tunnels are great if you have enough time but just generally soaking up the atmosphere of the place is fascinating. There's a great travellers vibe in Saigon as well.

Hope that helps.

Yes, I agree. 1 week in Vietnam is too short. Especially you want to see both Saigon and Hanoi. You need at least 3 weeks to see best of Vietnam. Thailand, I am not very experienced. You can't miss both Halong bay and Sapa in the North and Mekong Delta in the South. You wonder about Sapa? Sapa is very beautiful mountainous area, esp you can see colorful, unique hill tribes here. Sapa is also the best place in Vietnam for trekking ( as the tourguide of our group said). It is about 340 km from Hanoi. Night train is best way to get to Sapa.
To save time and see more, you'd better book an organized tour before heading.
