Good work, Sander!

This was implemented long before my time actually, so it's Sam and Peter you should thank for that particular bit of functionality. :)

As for the emails for travel helpers - yeah, the only way not to get those is not to be a travel helper. (That's why I'm not, and just check the forums manually for any threads in which I can offer advice.)
I think I suggested an opt-out for the travel helper emails to Sam and Peter a year ago or so, but they weren't too enamored of the idea. I can understand that too - some of the less popular destination countries only have a very few travel helpers, who'd probably have a very good chance to never see forum threads about those countries if they only checked the forum once a day or so, so emails there are a very good thing. (Also I read in one of the recent interviews that the travel helper service originated with some other website, and came to travellerspoint with the agreement that it'd be kept running here, so I wouldn't be too surprised if changes in functionality like that might be frowned upon from that quarter, too.)

It's funny this should be brought up today, as I've just been thinking for the past few days that this system needs some updating :)

For one, it worries me that the original poster (jaxstar) has switched off the email notification but is still getting emails notifying of forum posts on the travel help country. Just to be clear; this should NOT be the case (in my understanding)!

There are basically two ways to get a travel helpers attention. One is to send them a manual PM. More laborous, but far more rewarding as you have a real chance of a personalized response. The second is to post something in the correct regions forum and to select to notify all travel helpers for that specific country. This will not send the travel helpers a PM, however they will be sent an email notifying them of the thread and it's existence (including the content of the thread so they can choose whether or not to actually bother visiting the site to see if they can help).

My preference in how the system should become - this might change of course - is that when you sign up as a travel helper you have an extra tick box asking you if (besides the regular personal PM's that can be sent to you - this would always have to exist for the rather obvious reason that otherwise no one would be able to ask you in any way!) you mind receiving email notifications of forum posts that are on the topic of that country. This would still be available later on through the travel helper area so helpers can opt out/in at a later stage as well from these.

FYI Sander, there are no requirements regarding the system we took over (it wasn't really a system, more like a website with email addresses and descriptions!), so the not doing it last time was purely based on us not being ready for it yet

I'm going to file this in the 'to do' list, with no promises on exact ETA, but it doesn't seem very complex on the face of it....

Any other suggestions, please post them here and we can take it all into consideration before doing anything (note that I have to get Pete's input on this too before really committing to it, but I think he'll agree )

Jacqui,

Based on your profile, you're no longer registered as a travel helper for any country. So you should not be receiving any emails already. If you're still receiving them, do let us know and we'll look into it.

We can't do this, because each user can do it themselves. If you are subscribed to threads which are therefore sending you a lot of email updates, follow the instructions in the emails you get to quickly unsubscribe and stop receiving emails.

If you are getting a lot of messages (unlikely if you are not a travel helper), tick the box in your message center to stop any email notifications.

This will stop ALL emails to you.

Just to be sure, could it be the case that you have a second account under a different username and this is where all the emails are coming from? Would straightaway explain why the 'stopping notification' didn't work and why you would still be getting so many emails!

It would be really cool if we could turn off the notifications for travel helpers - I would love to be one but the amount of emails I was receving put me off, and I don't want to turn off notifcations altogether.

See, I learn something new every day! I am a travel helper for (regions) North & Central America so I don't receive too many TH questions and definitely no notifications when questions are posted in the forums. (It's that or no one likes me. Could happen.)

Same here, except I am for Europe and probably Asia as well. At the time i signed up I didn't have the time to go into each individual country and become a helper, and figured i'd do it later. Which I never did. But that seems like a good move now based on the number of emails people get! As it is, I get maybe 1 or 2 a week on average, which i can answer properly (where i can) and then just browse the forums reasonably regularly to see what i can help with in Europe/Asia/Gear etc.

And excepting one or two specific threads i have a proper interest in, i long ago turned off all thread notifications as it was killing my inbox, especiallay anything off-topic!

For all those Travel Helpers out there, we've just added a new option to disable forum notifications. Click on 'travel helper settings' in your Control Panel to update this setting.
