I'm heading to Luxembourg for 18 days in late June/early July, and I'm trying to figure out the best option for training it around a few countries.

Our tentative plans will go something like:

  • land in Paris, then off to
  • Marseille
  • Luxembourg
  • bits of Germany (probably around Mosel)
  • Brussels
  • Brugge
  • and maybe Zurich

We'll be centred in Luxembourg and travelling by train no more than about 2 hours or so to each place. What's my best bet for train fares? I looked on the Rail Europe site, and they offer a ticket for 4 borderng countries to be used any 5 days within a 2-month time frame - for a whopping $450 US.

Is it better to buy individual tickets if I'm travelling such short distances? Or is there another pass available?

Thanks!

Since you are going to be covering such long distances in a short time you may want to consider using some of the low cost airlines like Easy Jet, German Wings, BrusselSN, British Midlands,AerLingus, AirOne, etc.
I am flying from Brussels to Dublin, Dublin to London, London to Amsterdam, Paris to Palermo in Sicily, Palermo to Rome and Rome to Brussels for about $550. total in May and June.

Marseille is not just a 2 hours trainjourney. You'd best take easy jet for a flight between Marseille and Luxembourg. From Paris you should take the TGV to Marseille. Is just a couple of hours. For the rest use the train and buy seperate tickets for each journey.

Thanks, Bobby. The distances really aren't so long, though - no more than about 2 hours from one city to the next. It would probably take longer to check-in/fly/check-out at the airport than to just hop on the train, and the train stations are often a lot more central than the airport. You're right, though - looks like the plane would be the cheaper option.

Have a great trip to Europe!

Good point - maybe we'll train from Paris to Marseille, then plane it from Marseille to Luxembourg. Thanks!

Hello Tway

When I want to travel by train, I buy individual tickets.
I buy them, when they are special offers.
I will be going from Munich to Hamburg, in March for 29 euros each way. Also, one can get bargin international tickets. At the moment, there are offers to go to Amsterdam, from Munich, for 32 euros each way.
For the best deals, remain open minded about where u go.
I buy the special offers, in advance on the internet, when I see them advertised.

Each country has its train web site, were u can buy the tickets. I dont know what all the web site addresses are for the different countries.
But here is Germany and Italy.
www.db.de
www.fs-on-line.com

Also flying is an economical option
Next month I will be flying to Paris, from Munich, for 29 each way, including taxes. I flew to Madrid, from Munich, for the same price, this month

Wooooo! Booked the ticket and good to go! Zoom had a great deal, so I splurged for Premium Class which was the same price as Economy on all the other airlines. More legroom for the first time ever!

Zoom. It's a low-fare Canadian carrier.
