Anyone know if you can get a train to Lhasa from Kunming?

Xi'an -- Lhasa:
T222/T223 (0627--1828) 36h17min
T264/T265 (0826--1950) 35h39min
T164/T165 (0826--1950) 35h39min
T27 (0921--2058)
Soft sleeper 789/825 RMB for upper/lower bunk.

You also need to get a TTB permit which would add on to your costs. I don't know anyone who could arrange this in Xi'an.
Travelling from Xining might be better as travellers have reported getting reasonable prices for the TTB permit there. Plus the journey time is shorter (cheaper) and there're more trains available.
In any case buy the tickets after you get to China, not before.

Xining -- Lhasa:
T22/T23 (1649--1828) 25h47min
T222/T223 (1649--1828) 25h47min
T264/T265 (1811--1950) 25h47min
T164/T165 (1811--1950) 25h47min
T27 (1912--2058) 25h54min
K917 (2007--2230) 26h23min
N917 (2007--2230) 26h23min
Soft sleeper 600/627 RMB for upper/lower bunk. N917 is the one that originates in Xining so you'll probably be getting that one.

There's no direct train from Kunming to Lhasa. Best way to go would be to get a train to Chengdu and then train Chengdu -- Lhasa. Contact Sim's Cozy Guesthouse ( to help with getting tickets and paperwork done in advance for a reasonable price.

Sometimes I really wonder if people know where they are and what the surroundings have to offer. Just look on the map. The only way is travelling north towards chengdu or whatever place. There is only one trainline from lhasa and it leads to Golmud and from there further to places in China. H*ll, as far as I know, there are not even many official border crossings in eastern tibet, so from kunming to lhasa might not even be possible by car, bus or whatever. And I haven't even been there
