Suggestion for a new service on TP

Travel Forums System Talk Suggestion for a new service on TP

1. Posted by bentivogli (Travel Guru 2398 posts) 9y

I came across this thread in the Europe forum, which to my surprise didn't provoke a single answer.

It's basically a proposal to set up a service for swapping accommodation; ties in perfectly with the travelling budget of the average TP member, if you ask me. Any chance TP will start offering such a service, or am I overseeing important (legal) objections against doing so?

tnx,
Niels

You mean TP members swapping their houses?

Of course there are lots of websites offering this possibility already, and I think it's great.
But there is just a very big and important thing, called 'trust'. I would swap houses with some of the TP members, but most of them not.
And to be honest, I don't like to be in one place for my entire trip.

But not having any answers is strange...but it occurs on a regular basis actually.

You're right about the trust issue I think; still, a number of commercial websites offer this kind of service, and I was just liking the idea of having a non-commercial alternative for these. Whoever wants to use it, could; those who don't trust a total stranger to use their place, wouldn't.

In extension to this, I could also imagine TP to start a service like the kind that couchsurfing.com offered until they went backrupt. I for one like to have other travellers over for a night or so, especially whilst I'm not travelling myself. It's a great way to make new friends.

I just found out that couchsurfing.com is back!! A BIG yay :)

Hi Niels,

It is a great idea and I'm surprised no one answered either. It's been offered several times, as has a couchsurfing alternative. Although I can see them being tied in relatively easily with TP, there's limited resources available to us and we have to pick and choose pretty carefully what we have hired developers/freelancers and ourselves spend time on. This idea, like the couchsurfing one, really falls under the category "would love to to it, but would love to do other things more". Mainly because some of the sites that are already out there offering home/couch swaps are just so darn good already!! And there's quite a few of them in the home swap department!

But it's still somewhere back there in my mind; maybe for a few rainy weeks some time with nothing else to do

I refuse to swap houses with Phil - I have 7 more rooms than he does, and I've now been to Dublin! Okay, maybe I'd swap with Nikki or CC or even Jase. Can I swap with Pete and play in the new TP office and raid the wine rack??? (I know where he hides the vodka...) I don't think many want to visit "MIddle of Nowhere, USA"...

Isa now reutrns this thread to it's regularly scheduled topic. ;)

I'd swap with you, G, but you'd have to whip up a HUGE batch of cat-a-la-king first.

Will you at least feed the fish?? I'll leave instructions. (No, you don't get to broil them for dinner. Goldfish and plecos are gamey and tough.)

I'd swap with you too, T... Just expect to have islands, palm trees, sandbars, reefs, jellyfish, lobsters and vining greenery painted on your walls, floors, cabinets and any other available surface. I'll leave the bill for the paint on your counter. Have brush will travel!!!!!

Hi Niels,
Mainly because some of the sites that are already out there offering home/couch swaps are just so darn good already!!

Any chance of TP partnering with one of those sites, then, or including it in the links section? I can see a large overlap in the potential TP audience and the CS audience...

We'd love to partner with a site like that but none of them really offer any kind of partner system (ie. something that can be integrated, even just a little, in our site).

I'm always happy to link to sites that have great content though, so have added a link to couch surfing from our accommodation links area (http://www.travellerspoint.com/linkcat.cfm?category=13). Hard choice; accommodation or community?! :)

I'll get our links man to look into creating a sub-directory for this kind of concept in general and list a few of the sites in there.
