sunilnew has indicated that this thread is about Czech Republic

I am planning to explore east european countries, Czech Republic, Croatia, Romania, Poland & Austria by road around May'07. Is two week enough for visiting these countries ?

I request for help with regards to road route I should follow, important places to visit, accomodation, food...

As I speak only English, will language be a problem while visiting these countries ?

This all depends on what you want to see in each of these countries and how many days you want to spend in each city...you should find out how long each leg would take you to travel as well...from one city you want to visit to the next...Poland, alone could be worth at least a 3-4 day trip...and Croatia...a country I'll be hitting later on this year...again...is at least a good 5+ day visit...thats just calculating the time to tour/wander about...not the traveling time...ie. from Zagreb to Dubrovnik will likely take you 6-8hr drive...depending on traffic...good luck!

To get anything from your visit, no it isn't. You could easily spend three or four days in Prague alone, and still miss out on some of the sights. Then there are the smaller towns -places like Cesky Krumlov, Karlovy Vary, Karlstejn all deserve to be seen. So you could easily spend a week in the Czech Republic alone, and barely scratch its surface. I understand that when you are travelling so far from home it is tempting to go to as many places as possible, but I would suggest that you concentrate on just a couple of these countries - you will get far more from your trip - and you can always save up to return in the future!

Hi. Two weeks is not enough to see all these countries in any detail, so I would advise to review what is going to be really important to you personally. Student accommodation is always going to be your cheapest bet, and by cheap, I really do mean it, apart from Austria, which is more expensive than England. I would always go by train as it is comfortable and again cheap and you can literally go from Prague in the CZ to Warsaw on the same train, Prague to Croatia etc etc. It really is easy but Prague would be the best place to start. Personally, in Poland Krakow is a must, Warsaw is not. In Croatia, head down to places like Dubrovnik, but be sure to take a ferry up the Aegean sea as it is amazing.

Not speaking anything else besides English is not going to be a problem but as a rule of thumb, older people did not ever have the opportunities to learn it, so they only speak as a foreign language Russian or German. If you are from India, please just be a bit wary that attitudes in any of these countries are not as liberal as they are in places like England. Nothing too serious or anything to worry about, just try and stay within the tourist places. Enjoy your trip!

Hi,
Two weeks is way to little time to visit all of these countries. And by the way, in between are still several other countries you have to cross, like Slovenia, Hungary and/or Serbia if you want to go to Romania and Croatia.
Maybe stick to the Poland/Czech Rep/Austria part. For example start in Krakow and drive to the Tatra mountains (smallest high mountain range in the world) to Bratislava and on the Vienna and up north again to Cesky Krumlov and Prague.
This is doable without rushing it too much.

Some roads in Poland and Romania are not so good by the way, with lots of potholes or in the case of Poland, strange roads with 3 lanes where the middle lane can be used by everyone overtaking someone.

If you want to visit Croatia or Romania, visit only that country alone, maybe in combiantion with some parts of Slovenia or Hungary.

For Austria you need a Schengen visa, which is difficult to get for an Indian citizen. (Unless you are a resident in the UK, that is.)

I do not recommend getting the Schengen visa if you primarily want to explore Eastern Europe. It is simply too much hassle to go through.

I also highly recommend that you contact the embassies of the countries you intend to travel in on their visa requirements. All the countries you mentioned apart from Croatia are part of the EU and thus they have very strict visa laws.

I'm so glad to see you are including Lubljana. It's a very nice city and I can imagine it's going to be more popular very soon - so go now before the crowds! Dubrovnik is certainly a must. I realize it's so far south compared to where you are going to be mainly traveling.. but it's a must and one of my favorite cities in the world. I'm not sure two weeks will be enough but you could save time, like I did, by flying from Dubrovnik to Zagreb. They have a very early morning flight on Croatia Air and it's pretty inexpensive. Have fun!!
