At the end of August I need to go to Colombo, and in the same trip I'd like to visit a friend who is living in Manila. I'm trying to find good prices on flights but so far I can't get any lower then £618inc without going a ridiculous route.
The route I currently have is:
LON - CMB £327 Qatar
CMB - KUL £117 Malaysian
KUL - MNL £27 Air Asia
MNL - HKG £31 Cebu
HKG - LON £116 Oasis
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could do it any cheaper without doing a ridiculous route?
just an idea.... sri lankan airways flight to manila with free stop in cmb?
i dunno if they fly to manila? if not then maybe they do fly to kul or sin and then airasia from there? you would still have free stop in cmb and then only needthe airasia flight extra to international flights?
Sri Lankan Airways would probably be cheaper. They always give special offers for flights to Colombo, originating from London. Currently, they have an offer for GBP 99 (one way) + 33 (taxes) but this is valid only up to end of February. At the same time, they keep having different offers each month that you will surely get a ticket if you try in June/July.
If you don't want to take the risk and wait till the last minute, try going to their website and find out what they would charge you for a Lon - Col - KL flight, if you book for August now.
Did you try Czech Airlines as well? They, alongwith Qatar Airways, generally offer cheaper tickets to Colombo.
And, just try out Emirates Airways. Though they are generally more expensive, having the same management as Sri Lankan Airways, their airfares to Colombo are sometimes nearly the same as Sri Lankan.

Thanks very much for the advice guys. I've seen the fare you mean Ahila, £99+tax one way to Colombo is fantastic and if I can get that at the time I go I'll be laughing so I'll wait and see what they offer when their current deal expires. In your experience are they likely to offer a similar deal at the end of August? I'm told that there's a special holiday in Kandy at this time of year so might that rule it out?
I think I might book all my flights apart from my Colombo one now as I don't think the others are going to get any cheaper - and just leave my Colombo one until I can get a good one way deal on it - does that sound like a good idea?
The Perahera season in Kandy is indeed between July - August and Kandy becomes very crowded and expensive during that month. So, if you are going to book a hotel, you should do so now itself. Also, it is the summer holidays for people living in the west and therefore tends to be the peak tourist season for Sri Lanka as well. So, it is a bit of a risk waiting till the last minute but I think you can afford to wait a couple of months to book your ticket and keep a watch out for special offers.
There is another airline that came up recently and which is becoming popular here: Air Arabia offers one way tickets from Sharjah to Colombo for 42 euros, but it is a self-catering one (in the sense that you have to take your own meal and a blanket, if you require one). If you get cheap tickets up to Dubai, then this could be one you could consider.
