I am visiting San Fran at the end of August this year. We are interested in visiting Alcatraz and have been advised to book this before we go. The only option we can book here in Australia is to do a full day tour - we only want to do the Alcatraz. Does anyone know where or how we can book this direct on the net?

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason,
You can book tours at www.alcatraz.us or the official site,
http://www.nps.gov/alcatraz/tours/

I'm not sure how true the claims are for the tours being booked up - they would say that wouldn't they?!
We just turned up at the Pier (39? 41? can't remember) and paid on the day, but it was February.
If you are only going to be there for a day, then it might be wise, but if you have time, then I think you'll be OK.:)

June is quite a busy month for the Alcatraz tours. If you can, I'd suggest you book ahead. Make sure you dress warmly, as temperatures in June and July in SF can be a bit nippy. And I know the site tells you this, but take food with you if you plan on being hungry. There's no food on the island and buying it close to the boats is expensive. I love the tour. The night tour is fun, too, but only if you've already done the normal tour. Good luck!
