I want to do a day trip to the Sacred Valley from Cusco and a sightseeing day trip in Lima to see the highlights.

Can I book these there? If anyone has booked this way I would appreciate your input and past experience.

Lots lots lots of travel agencies in cuzco, no problem to go the day after you booked.
Don't know if you are staying the night in Lima, but if you just have to kill time at the airport, just walk out of the terminal and some 2 or 3 hour trips to the highlights of Lima will be offered. It's ok and safe.

I will be in Lima for 2 1/2 days. Do I have to book the tour at the airport or are there more places to book in the city? I am staying in Miraflores.

In Cusco I have 3 days. Are the agencies all around the plaza de armas?

Thanks for your help.

Actually, I haven't got a clue about Lima, but if you have time, arranging it at the airport is not necessary. I guess there are agencies enough in Lima itself.
And yes, in cuzco the touroperators are along the plaza de armas. Try to take a decent one, not the cheapest one.

Can I book a tour for the same day if I am in the square early in the am?

Not to Machu Picchu, trains leave at 5 or 6 am. Maybe to the sacred valley.

Sorry, that's what I meant. I wanted to know if I could go the square early, around 8 am, and join a tour for the sacred valley that day.

Cusco tours - my Peru book says you can go on a bus (combis or colectivos) to get to the Sacred Valley. It only costs $1 each way.
Alternatively, it says you can have a taxi take you for the full day for about $20.
Has anyone gone this way? You thoughts please.

I took the local bus to the Sacred Valley for the day. It was cheap and easy to get around. If you go to the Pisac market you will have to be patient because there are tons of people piling on the buses back to Cuzco. Check which bus you get on towards Cuzco because you may end up arriving in a different place than you started from. It is easy to do this without out a tour. Many people have taken taxis and may be a good way to see all of the sites if there are a few of you going. If you still want to take a guided tour I suggest stopping into SAS in the Plaza. I used them for the Inca Trail and they were incredible. They offer day trips as well though I am not entirely sure about where they go or how much.

I think too that is not necessary to take a tour. A good book and a map is enough. The one problem is that could be dangerous if you travel alone. There are many groups of tourists in Cuzco, maybe you can join with them.
