First Post - Last Post

Travel Forums System Talk First Post - Last Post

Each thread has the date of the "last post" next to it.

I think it might be worthwhile adding a column that has the date of the "first post". This way, you can see how long the thread has been active for - some are resurrected after being inactive for quite sometime. Other threads have the same titles as very old threads, and it can be confusing whether you are reading the original thread, or a new thread with the same title.

Hmmm - I think I could have written that clearer.

The original date does of course show when you're viewing the thread, but that's not really what you're after I guess...

On this topic but slightly not, I got a suggestion recently which I think would cover the reason you'd like to include it James. Basically, rather than have the 'last posted' forum threads as the default for sorting, make it sorted by the 'last started' threads.

This way, 'bumping' threads can't occur and people that ask questions are more likely to get their question viewed for a reasonable period, whereas now it could disappear quickly if there's a lot of other active threads.

The main reason for not including the 'first posted' date is a real estate thing. Only so much space on that page. Doesn't make a difference to those of us that browse in big screens, but if you're on a 800x600 resolution (which we still support), it's gonna be ugly and very cluttered

Your input on this manner of changing the default sort method would be great!

before anyone mentions it, on the 'All Threads' page you can of course already sort by two different columns if you like

Thorntree at Lonely Planet sorts their threads that way - by most recently started. It's good to see new threads, but a bit of a pain to try and go back and find threads that you are active in and are interested in seeing the answers to. Sure, you could subscribe to every thread that you want to see, but that just fills up your email with notifications, rather than allowing you to read the board when you wish.

It also means that threads were you have new information aren't brought to the fore. There's been a few times when I posted a questions and didn't get an answer, then after I figured it out went back and posted the answer. I suppose this would still show up in the search (which is my main point in posting the answer), but still unless you were aware of the thread you wouldn't see that an answer has been posted.

So, my vote is for keeping the current system.

I think it would include a toggle icon on the last post column so you can sort by this if you preferred it. Also worth pointing out that the last 50 threads you are active in can be found via this page (which you can get on your home page by including the "My Latest Forum Entries" taglet).

Either way, this change is probably not going to happen very soon and we'll certainly not abandon a well-working status quo altogether.

I'm with Greg on this. I much prefer seeing the 'latest active threads' rather than the 'latest new threads'. I'm open to making it optional to have the forum show in order of latest new threads, but think the default should be as it is now.

Yup. I also wouldn't mind seeing (maybe by boldening the thread titles, the same way that you do on the start page for threads that have been replied to since i last replied) threads which have been replied to since i last looked at them.

If you are on the forums all the time, it's easy enough by date, but if not it's easy to miss them, especially when some threads have very similar titles (and even if i reply to a thread, if somebody replies to me and it's irrelevant/whatever, then the thread still appears that way in threads on my front page. It would be more useful if they unchecked - if i've read the reply - and then came on when somebody posted another new reply, as it might be the third of fourth reply that i need/can/want to reply to)

Actually, i'd love to be able to have a list of "watched threads" - Some way i can subscribe to them so i can keep track of them, But NOT with anything being delivered to me. Just a page in the forums/my profile where i can see all threads i've tagged as worth watching (sometimes i don't have time to reply, can't offer anything but am interested in reading, or am likely to be able to offer something down the line but not yet).

Being even more demanding (sorry) it's just occured to me that disgested threads deliveries would be useful as well - either it sends all replies to a specific thread once a day, or it sends replies to all threads i'm watching once a day in a combined email [but with them still grouped by thread]

Phew.
