Found some cheap flights to Alghero in Sardinia, and was thinking about going for a long weekend (or more). Dont know anything about the place though. Any advice?

Get out into the countryside.

You'll need transport, but the island is absolutely stunning, and the whole island feels Mediterranean instead of Italian, which i like.

Sardinia is a very attractive island. Alghero is actually a pretty nice, historic town. You can get around the island a bit using buses, there are quite a few buses around the island from Alghero, but I guess you might not be able to get to the most out-of-the way bits without your own transport. You could always rent a scooter!

Remember that Sardinia is about half the size of Switzerland. You're not going to see all of it just in a few days.
From Alghero, try to travel the northern part of the island: first to Sassari, then from there along the coast to Castelsardo, S. Teresa di Gallura, Palau and Arzachena. From here, turn left to Baia Sardinia, Porto Cervo (Costa Smeralda) and then the road along the coast again to Olbia. Ultimately return from Olbia over Monti, Oschiri and Sassari, back to Alghero.
That's a hell of a trip, and the previous advice to rent a car is essential, but it's one of the most scenic and interesting parts of this fascinating island.
Have a nice trip.
