Asia in 6 weeks?

Travel Forums Asia Asia in 6 weeks?

1. Posted by kevingoing (Budding Member 16 posts) 10y

due to not being able to afford travelling until November, and wanting to be in Rio for the carnival next February, I will only manage six weeks maximum in Asia on my trip.

Is this enough time to see enough of Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia? saw a tour round and through each country and that said 5/6 weeks was a decent pace to go at.

But if I had to sack one country off which should it be?

Certainly want Vietnam and Thailand, but didn't know Laos existed until the other day if i'm honest!

When i was reading this, I thought skip Vietnam. Not because it's not nice probably, but because from Bangkok a nice circle could be through Cambodia and Laos.
But then I read that you certainly wanted to see Vietnam as well, I would say skip Laos, mainly because of some logistic reasons. Don't know where you'll arrive and leave again?

Vietnam looks incredible and wouldnt want to miss it really, but whatever fits i'll have to go for.

as advised in another post, if you go to Laos you need time(and patience). So leave it for another time it is best appreciated without deadline.
But the boat ride from North Thailand to Laos is good fun.....

That's a lot of ground to cover in 5-6 weeks but you can certainly do it if you pick a few highlights in each country. I love Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, but haven't been to Vietnam yet. From what I've read a "proper" trip to Vietnam, in order to see all of the country, would require the better part of a month. But that could be said of Thailand, and to a less extent Cambodia, also. Each country is packed with interesting things to see and do. That said, as beautiful as it is, I would either leave off Laos, or just do a quick 4-5 swing through Luang Prabang and Vientiane to get a feel for it.

We're hoping to do Asia/Malaysia in 6 and a half weeks.
Will also be in Novembertime as well, for the same reasons - need time to save!

Our route
Fly into Singapore
train to Hat Yai to get bus to Krabi
Krabi (including Koh PhiPhi and Phuket)
Khao Sok National park

(fly to) Hanoi (Vietnam) ( - £35ish)
(day trip to) Halong
Bus down the coast stopping off for a day each in:
-Hoi An
-Nha Trang
Ho Chi Minh
Mekong Delta tour (3days 2nights) which leaves us off in

Phnom Penh (cambodia)
bus up to Siem reap and back
bus down to Sihanoukville and back

flight to Bangkok ( £35ish)

then onto Cairns, Oz.

Its only really gona be a day or two in each place, more sight seeing rather than 'learning the culture' - due to time/budget constraints!

What do you's think of that - is there anything you'd leave out?

- Has anyone took the bus journey down from Hanoi to HoChiMinh, was the travelling a nightmare?

here's the bus website:

Hi Kevin,
Although said already here, Laos is beautiful, but go for Bangkok to Hanoi overland in about 6 weeks. It leaves much more time to really appreciate Vietnam and other parts like Cambodia. You can try to fly back to Bangkok from Hanoi with airasia. It has cheap flights and you don't have to go back all the way overland.
Have fun, Michael.
