Anyone been?

What's it like?

Spending a week there and then travelling over land (seems a hell of a long way!) to Rio.

Been there, it's a great country, with lots of different scenery and places to see, from desert to sub antarctic regions.
Do you stay around Santiago? I found that the least attractive part of Chile, but still ok.
If you have time, visit the northern parts for a week and travel from there to northern Argentina (salta, iguazu falls) to Rio, it's nicer than going via Mendoza to Buenos Aires.

Chile is a fantastic country - its so diverse. Its a pity that you have just a week. You could take an overnight bus from Santiago down to Puerto Varas and the lake district. its really pretty down there. You could also cross the border for one night to Bariloche on the Argentinian side (worths seeing) before bussing back up to Santiago again.

Alternatively, you could head out to the coast to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar - the beachside resorts - adn just relax there before your long jounrey to Rio. :)

Chile is beautiful, but expensive, and except for the far south where you're unlikely to end up in just one week, the other SA countries offer similar landscapes while being considerably cheaper :)

bentivogli, how much do you think should be budgeted per day in chile (USD)? i am planning to spend a month travelling from the southern tip up to santiago.

In 2003, I spent around $US 30 - 40 a day in Chile. I like to sleep in my own room, though, so that added to the cost some. I think $US 25 is pretty minimum.

i think i can handle that for a month - from what i hear i will save a few bucks while in bolivia, equador and peru..

I was there last in 2003/4 as well, but I reckon the costs have gone up quite a bit since. I wouldn't really know exactly how expensive it is; ask samsara2, I believe she's been there recently.

Chile has the honour of being the thinnest country in the world if you compare its length with its width. The country is so long that in the north you will find the driest of deserts and in the south you are on the closest point to the South Pole.

See the next of the article and discover what to visit in chile :
