Not sure whether we should go to munich or budapest. we will be comming from vienna and we're thinking of doing one or the other. We will already see germany as we will begin in frankfurt and later spend several days in berlin. We would have liked to see both Munich and Budapest but with time we have it isn't possible.
suggestions?

I don't know about Budapest but Munich is an interesting city and you have many things to see and to do there, especially in summer.

Munich is totally different from Berlin. Seeing Berlin is like seeing NYC - its the symbol of everything German, but it is not Germany. If I needed to compare Munich to a city in Northern America, I would say "like Memphis" or "New Orleans", just to underscore the difference towards Berlin (which I would compare to New York) and due to the whole north-south thing. Berlin is hip, while Munich is all tradition. Bavarian tradition.

But if you are going from Austria, I would recommend going to Budapest. Southern German culture is similar to Austrian, so I would think that you'll have more fun in Budapest (never been though). Budapest used to be the second capital of the old hungarian-austrian double monarchy, so if you have seen the first (Vienna) it makes sense to see the second.

I would certainly choose Budapest.
Since u will already be seeing Germany, then going to a former Eastern block country will create nice variety.

hands down by far munich! which is different to the rest of germany.

but vienna to budapest is only a couple of hours drive so why not budapest?

dont expect too much from budapest...its a former communist country were a lot of people dont smile, dont know english, etc

watch out for the taxi drivers they are the biggest scammers! and pretend that they dont know any english at all.

if you stay in budapest make sure you stay in the centre of the city, because taxis in budapest arent cheap and its a big enough city in terms of...its quite spaced out.

its split into two sides by the river....thats were you have buda and pest.

i cant remember which is which...but its either buda / pest were one of the sides is very poor, not so nice, nothing to do and nothing to see....everything is on the side were the city center is....

Hi,

Munich is defenitely worth a visit. Beer, sightseeing, shopping, eating everything is wonderful there. But Budapest is supposed to be great too. Last time I have been there is 15 years ago, so I cant help you choosing....

Ive never been to Budapest but have been in Munich 3 times, as I luv the place!! the bavarians are lovely people - very friendly - and definitely enjoy a party (I went to Oktoberfest the last 2 years!)

The city itself is actually very beautiful as well, with the buildings in the centre of town being a strange mish-mash of architechtural styles from past-eras... obviously all re-build since the war but cool nonetheless!

some great restaurants as well! be sure to check out Hofbruhaus in the city for the quintessential Bavarian drinking experience!
