viennalife has indicated that this thread is about Austria

I am going to be in Vienna for six months and need to have health insurance coverage. Anyone have any recommendations? I have no US insurance and need to buy coverage. Since Austria has socialized medicine, I am unsure how coverage works. While there I need to get birth control pills. Or should i buy 6 months supply here before going? That would be expensive but maybe the smarter way to go and just get the cheapest coverage in order to satisfy the visa requirement?

First of all you will need private insurance, as you are only medically insured by the country if you (or ur husband/mum etc.) work in Austria.

There is only one company that does insure foreigners here, but it's a bit complicated. So the only option is to get offers in the US and go for the best deal.

You can only get the pill if you've got a precription for it. Moreover the chance that u will get the same product here, is very small and I would never do it again (talking out of experience)

hope I could help a little bit

If the insurance is a requirement for getting a Schengen (student) visa, the austrian embassy will be able to point you to the right insurance company. Not every insurance is accepted for the purpose of a visa.

I am not a student actually. I am trying to get a D class visa in order to live there for six months with my boyfriend who is an Austrian citizen. I am an American citizen.
