Starting to research the China part of my trip and could do with the sage words of those of you who have been there already.

People have said to me "Your'e crazy, travelling CHina overland. The country is enormous!" but I just need a realisitic idea of how long it takes by train between the following places:

Kunming - Chengdu - Xian - Beijing

I would only have 2-3 weeks at most to spend in China, if that, and while I'm not afraid of long distances on trains or busses, i;m trying to figure out what's worth trying to squeeze in.

Also, I dont want to book in with a tour. I'd rather travel independently. Did anyone have extreme difficulties navigating their way around the country with the language barrier?

Any advice really appreciated. :)
