Hi was thinking of heading up to Melbourne next week. Would like to stay for a week or so. Any ideas ? Looking for somewhere to meet a few folk and somewhere not to far from the airport.

Many thanks x

Greenhouse has a very good reputation and is incredibly central.

There's no point trying to find something close to the airport. The city is 25 minutes or so away from the airport and for the enjoyment of your stay I would suggest finding something in the city. There's a decent bus link to the airport on Spencer Street and it's easily accessible from anywhere downtown.

I can warn you against staying at one, but can't comment for good ones. All Nations Backpackers is a trashy dump, amongst the trashiest you are likely to come across in your travels in Australia. I stayed there for 4 days on a quick trip to Melbourne which I had pre booked and I was so glad to leave the crappy place after 4 days, I even checked out at 7.30am despite the fact my flight left at about 8.30pm. You can see that it is a trashy dump and not worth staying at simply by looking at comments on hostelworld and all the other hostel booking sites which have it listed as a lot of people will rate it badly. It was noisy as hell when I stayed there (road works going on right out the side). It did have some character, was in a very central location close to public transport, but really it is worth avoiding unless you have no other option in Melbourne.

I stayed in melbourne international backpackers which is in the centre of the city.
the prices are quite cheap, the rooms are nice, its close to all the touristy places and there are lots of nice people staying there.

I expect you all know about this but I didnt until recently - try www.hostelworld.com Its a fab site and you can read other travellers views on the hostels, get prices, book and see what facilities they all have. Hope this helps :)
