Ok.. i've never been backpacking before nor have I ever been to South America, and since i'll be travelling alone i've decided to join a tour group. There's 2 tours that i'm considering and the only difference between the 2 tours is 10 days in Ecuador and 5 extra days in Peru. The 10 days in Ecuador does include 3 days in the Amazon which i'd like to do, but the price difference in the 2 tours is about $1200CAD. Should I do the extra 15 days or should I save the $1200CAD?
Irrespective of where they take you, I'd say that 1200CAD for 15 days is not at all a bad price, so I'd do it.
That said, Ecuador is spectacular; one of SA hidden gems. Of course being part of a tour group massively restrains your freedom of movement, but still you should be able to see a bit of this wonderful, strange country. Go!
I'm only not so sure about the Ecuadorian Amazon. Stories that I've heard vary; some say it's beautiful, but I have to Ecuadorian coworkers who tell me that the Peruvian part is much better.
