I will be in Paris with my girlfriend from the 14th of July through the 28th. I would like to do 3 or 4 days in either the Riviera, Loire, or Brittany. I was inclined to go to Nice, Monaco, and Cannes for the beaches, mediterranean, etc. but I heard that some people don't like it there. Would you recommend Normandy or seeing Chataux's instead?
I really enjoyed Nice when I went, so much so that we decided to stay an extra day while we were there! We met so many great people, the beaches (once you get used to the pebbles) were great to hang out on, and the city itself was very beautiful. We also went to Monaco and Monte Carlo, which I really recommend to go to as a day trip (staying there would be super expensive!). I think Normandy would be very interesting to see, just for it's historical value, but, to use a cheesy movie-critic saying, I give the Riviera two thumbs up!
Your quite right, some people really don't like it at all, and it depends on the sort of people you are and what you like.
The Riviera can be both brilliant and horrendous at the same time. I love chunks of it, not so keen on other bits, but it's definitely worth seeing. However, July it will be packed, so if your looking as much for somewhere to relax, it's not neccessarily the best choice.
Normandy and Brittany are both lovely; the Loire valley etc can be even better, and will be more relaxed.
But the Riviera is certainly worth seeing. I wouldn't rule out Provence (either instead or as well as the Riviera), whilst the Alpine / Pyreneean areas both have allot going for them as well, from a sceneray/out doorsy point of view
