whats the best (and not too expensive) way to get from perth to sydney via melbourne?
we were looking at the train but the indian pacific just goes perth-adelaide-sydney i think its more expensive if you get it to adelade and then the overland to melbourne. we may then drive up to sydney.
Keep in mind that it may take you up to 12 hours to drive from Melbourne to Sydney, and while the scenery is great about an hour from Sydney (mountains, forest, rivers), the rest is kilometres and kilometres of dry dusty, overgrazed, undervegetated paddocks.
I drove it with my Mum. We took turns and it was okay, but I just thought I'd give you a heads up.
Lis (from Melbourne).
Granted I havent had a look at the costs associated with train travel for a long time. Given that I live in Perth its probably going to be cheapest to get a one way flight to melbourne and then pick up another one way from melbourne to sydney. I am fairly sure that the flights are very cheap one way melb - syd. Virgin Blue currently quote per to melb for $149 AUS and melb to syd for $55 AUS but these are current specials.
Hope that helps
