i haven't ever been truly let down by a place but i didn't fall in love with paris..... by any stretch of the imagination.

i found the majority of people i encountered rude and surly ( i am always the last person to believe in stereotypes but i have to say this was true) and generally unwilling to help.

it is a beautiful city and there are heaps of good restaurants, bars, sights etc. but i just didn't get the same 'spark' other cities have given me. new york, london, berlin, amsterdam... to me these cities all had a certain something that paris lacked.

of course it is possible i just had a crap time there in crap weather...

joey ;)

Tanzania
I was really disapointed by the people. They consider tourist are cows they have to milk. I went to couple of african countries and just loved them especially Malawi. I felt out of place everywhere in tanzania, I did not feel welcome at all.

Concerning London, I found it top of list of the best cities. Always moving, always something to do. I just love it.

Meramec cavern in Missouri was a disappointment. Dubbed "America's Cave," Meramec cavern has an excellent history including being a hidding spot for the outlaw Jesse James. But upon arriving, the place was tourist kitch. The main entrance was turned into a ballroom complete with disco ball. The cave was nice, but nothing special and no ability to get off the tourist trail and really explore the cave. At the end, you get to sit and watch a SUPER CAMPY light show while "God Bless America" plays, ending with the American Flag being shown in lights on the side of the cave wall. Not at all the day of cave adventure I was hoping for.

(FYI - I took that, word for word, from a reply I made back in March of 2005 to the thread: Over rated tourist destination - Where are the worst?, for those who like reading more about how much travel sucks. :) )

I would have to say the worst places I have been are Indiana...just a miserable state, especially Middletown and Anderson Indiana, never again will I step foot in that state...and Paris, Tennessee, that place is definitely the worst place I have been, the people are rude, there is absolutely nothing exciting to do there, just a waste of time. Mind you, I have stayed very long periods of time in those places and I wish I had not.

Jamaica. Beautiful island. But pestered to death by people selling everthing from themselves to ganja. Could not find one moment's peace. Had a man pull a knife on us. Never again. This was Montego Bay. Stayed only 2 days out of intended five, then fled. Was also not crazy about Buchurest, but that visit was back in the days of the Communist regime. Dismal, gray, nasty people, a policeman stole my raincoat! NEVER AGAIN. Tuan Don/Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, USA. Can see why someone might not like Washington,DC. Unless you're American, it isn't of much interest.

Lake Placid, NY in the U.S. Heard that it was quant and a good place to unwind. Don't be fooled! We drove 6 hours to get there, and realized it was nothing but expensive tourist traps. A couple Gaps, Ben & Jerry's, Hallmarks. Horrid place. Turned around immediately. Please, don't waste your time here!

apart from dissapointing side of anything discussed here i was amazed how friendly the americans were. i wasnt expecting anything.

me and my mates were offered free accommodation!, to stay in some dudes house, must be rich cos he drove a hummer when we asked him for directions and he had a stunning wife.

even when my parents visited new york some random local took my parents to all the great spots in the city, invited them back to his house for coffee and had a real joy.

i have never witnessed anything of the sort on my travels, not even in ireland, i mean no one in ireland invites strangers into there house.

perhaps it was just random to what happened to me, my friends and parents but 3/3 is a goood.

you walk into any shop in new york and the staff totally look after you and are so nice and friendly, maybe its artificial and all that but look at it this way, rather get served the fake way then some moany old cow with a non smiling face here in dublin.
