I'm in the process of planning my trip to Canada, and am a little concerned about finding somewhere good to stay in Vancouver. I'm going to be stopping in Toronto for the first week, and there seem to be a number of decent hostels there, but i'm struggling to find anything of similar quality in Vancouver! Does anyone have any ideas? as otherwise i'm going to resort to a hotel (any suggestions on that?).
i've never been there myself but i did some research because i was planning a trip to whistler with a stop in vancouver. I found some great prices on hostels from $8-$30 usd @ http://hostelworld.com
they looked nice and were in the general downtown area. I also belive there's apprx. 4 mountains to ski/snowboard here.
I cancelled my trip to whistler due to the fact that the hostels were all sold out, popular time beacuse of spring break. I'm now heading to Banff, AB Canada which i hear is epic!
I was in Vancouver last week, and stayed at the Hi-Vancouver Downtown. As YHA/HI hostels go, it wasn't as nice as most of those I stayed at in New Zealand and Australia, but much nicer than in Europe. Free breakfast, and a very decent kitchen with ample fridge-space (unheard of!) The only real lack was a lounge area without television. There's also Hi-Vancouver Central about six blocks closer to the center of downtown, which supposedly has even nicer facilities, at the cost of perhaps being a bit noisy due to its location.
When in Vancouver, if you get a sunny day, make certain to go up to Grouse Mountain (take the seabus to north vancouver, and then the bus to grouse mountain) - totally worth it.
