Just wondering, what's the best places between Melbourne and Cairns to visit? What is a realistic timescale to travel between those cities? How much would it cost to travel by bus? etc etc. Would be grateful for all your tips, thanks Andrew.

I just got back from a short 3 week trip on the East coast, I found Brisbane really cool. It's a built up but comparatively small city, beautiful but real accessible, also a really good nightlife! If you go to Cairns btw, make sure to do the bungee jump!

I guess at least one month will give you some time in several places, but you sure are not going to see everyting.
Of course, places like Sydney, Brisbane, Whitsundays, Fraser Island and Mission Beach are the highlights regarding cities and beaches, but also some NP like Lamington near Brisbane or the Blue Mountains near Sydney are worth a visit.
The Great Barrier reef shouldn't be missed and the area north of Cairns (daintree, cape tribulation) is beautiful as well.
Have fun!

I'm planning to do Cairns to Brisbane over 4 weeks, including Brisbane, Tangalooma, Long Island in the Whitsundays, Bundaberg and hoping to do fraser island for the day. I will be spending a week in cairns working towards my PADI certificate on the barrier reef. At some point I would like to go to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane as I've heard great things.

There are loads of things to do and see, i would say a minimum of a month in queensland alone.

Have fun though!!

Stop on the Gold Coast to check out the theme parks - a new one opened just last year, giving the area a total of 5 now!! They're lots of fun, althoug to do them justice you need to spend about a day at each, so maybe just pick a couple out considering your time frame:)

I'd plan at least a 4week trip to do from Melbourne to Cairns (if not longer) - If you can I'd look at hiring a camper van rather than a bus as you would miss a lot along the way. From Melb up to Sydney you've got the Snowy River region and the Blue Mountains, I'd then drive up the coast taking in the Hunter Valley Wine region and then of course Byron Bay (whilst around Byron check out Lennox Heads), Gold Coast is a great place to go out and yes some great theme parks - don't forget the Outback spectacular (you will need to book this in advance). Head up the coast stopping in at Sunny Coast (Australia Zoo) and head to Rainbow Beach (from here you can Hire 4WD to go accross to Fraser for a couple of days - definately worth the trip, Up to Bundy and on up to Airlie Beach - from here you can do the whitsunday islands, up to cairns make sure you do the atherton tablelands (great train ride up the mountains from cairns) and if you can go further do the daintree. Hope you all have a fun and safe trip.

hey guys - i've got a question posted in the RTW forum on the East coast, and got a bit of help, was wondering if you could help too.

Basically I'm travelling from Cairns to Sydney (with a return trip to Melbourne at the end so my girlfriend can see the neighbours set ), arriving in Cairns around the 28th Dec 07, and flying out of Sydney about 8 weeks later.

I've been told the weather up north can be a bit of a nightmare when we arrive - could any of you guys suggest a basic itinerary based with the weater in mind? don't want to waste your time, so just a rough guide, so that i can avoid being stuck inside for days due to the rain.

we're soooo wanting to do the whole beachy type thing, especially Whitsunday's/frasier island etc, so need to work out a timescale of when to arrive!

Darren, lots of rain, often cyclones at this time of year up north. Barron falls near Cairns is a must see at that time of year, you can take the train up to Kuranda to see them (lots to do in Kuranda as well- butterfly sanctuary, small native animal zoo- koalas, kangaroos, wombats, markets, venom zoo with scorpions and snakes) or take the cable ride over the falls and the rain forest and catch the train back down- lots of info in Cairns on doing it.

If your driving Paranella park down near mission beach is cool. A spanish guy built sort of a castle there years ago, awsome gardens, a cave with micro bats in it, giant eels that u can hand feed, turtles sitting on logs. We spent a day there, and loved every minute.

The rain may stop a lot of things, but the waterfalls will look great, and most are only a 5min max walk from the car, lots of them in the Atherton tablelands to the south-west of Cairns.

There is so much to see I could write pages on it. Best bet is to check out a tourist information place in each of the major cities you come too, they will have info on what to do there, and will be able to recommend what is good at that time of the year.

You will be wishing for more time!
