Doctors without borders (medecins sans frontieres MSF) has started an international petition. The purpose is to prevent that treatment of HIV patients in developing countries get into danger. Many HIV patients in the developing countries are depending on unbranded medicins because they are cheaper. These unbranded medicins are from India. 80% of the 80.000 HIV patients that are under treatment of MSF, get a better life by using unbranded medicins.
Medicin manufacturer Novartis thinks that India is violating the international patent and started a lawsuit. When Novartis wins the case, India also has to take a patent on the HIV inhibitors, which means that these medicins get too expensive for millions of HIV infected people in the third world and the MSF.
Personally I think this is a ethical issue and manufacturers should forget the financial issue. Novartis is basically in its right but will this be at cost of millions of lives?
