guiny has indicated that this thread is about Netherlands

I will be in Amsterdam only for five hours in August between a flight and another. Any ideas/suggestions of what can not be missed in Amsterdam? Any places I should not go? Any suggestions for cheap and nice places to eat?

door to door your looking at a 30 min journey, actually 45 min...this is from getting of your plane, going out, getting train into city, then returning back, going through security etc...you are easily going to lose out of your 5 hours 2 hours-3 hours!

this gives you 2 hours! if i was you i would just have a walk about a long the canals and check out the shops. grab yourself a coffee, smoke, or beer...whatever suits ya.

there is lots of things to do and see in amsterdam but in such a short time limit...you really are limiting yourself.

Thank you for the reply. I am actually counting five hours including everything that you mentioned. I will arrive at 11h00 and take the flight to Cardiff at 21h50. Considering I have to be in the departure gate about one hour before it becomes 20h00. Maybe I will meet a friend at the airport at 18h00, but it is likely he won't be able to go.
So I think I have from 12h00 to 18h00 to explore the city. Of course, there is also the train time,...
I have already visited Amsterdam before in December under the same circunstances but I went with a sightseeing tour frm Schiphol. Now I want to take a train and do it myself.
Your idea of just walk around seems good though. I might end up doing that, although, the Van Gogh Museum or Anne Franke's House are two places I really would like to go,...

Hello Audrey

U can get the train directly to the old town, of amsterdam. It is fast and punctual. As far as I remember it only takes around half hour, to get from the airport, to the old town, but I am not certain, about this.

Walk around the old town. It is beautiful, and u will find plenty of economical places to eat.

I dont think u will have time, to visit anything in particular, so just soak up the atmosphere, at a pavement cafe, after u eat.

I do hope your flight won't be today, weather is very gray here. But, in 6 hours you could consider visiting the national museum of jewish history; it just opened a new exhibition on jewish fotography, very interesting. And smack in the center of Amsterdam

Experience a smoke. Just find a coffeeshop and enjoy 1 to 2 hours somewhere off this world;). (Bentivogli, before you react....I know Amsterdam is not only about smoking joint but in this case that's almost the only option;))

Best thing is to rebook your connecting flight and take an extra day in Amsterdam, it's worth while to stay longer.
If not you must visit the Anne Frank Huis because all other museums take much longer to visit.

I am convinced. I certainly won't have enough time to see anything as you say. I will go to the city centre, have lunch, relax and visit the shops around. I hope I will pass and eventually visit Asmterdam in many other occasions in the future.
