If you want to meet locals, stay away from hostels. If you want to meet fellow travelers, go for the hostels and book an oz bus.

Okay if you are travelling by yourself definitely do not hitchhike. I wouldn't advise it anywhere particularly for a young lady. That leaves the question of meeting people and it seems like you are an affable type anyway who likes people and that will stand you in good stead with Aussies who are laid back and like that sort of person. I think you would be well advised at that time of year to go from Sydney and head up toward Queensland. It is going to be in our winter so Sydney will be cool but as you head North it gets warmer and places like Townsville and Cairns are very nice at that time of the year. You could bus it from Sydney to say Coffs Harbour (NSW) spend a day or two there then bus on up to Brisbane, capital of Queensland, then bus on again up to Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays which is beautiful then hit Townsville and then bus up to Cairns. All wonderful places and you can get a great suntan and there are a lot of young people around. Best places to meet Aussies is in the bars of hotels, not the public bar but the saloon bars or lounges. Also on the beaches. Perth, Western Australia may be a bit too cool at that time of year and takes a while to get over there. :)
