The UN has 192 members and FIFA has 208 (i think). TP lists 242 and the TCC http://www.travelerscenturyclub.org/has 315 countries and territories (although some of them are in no way independent). The number of countries, and what is a country is something that is entirely a personal choice, to a point.

I myself regard a country a country if it is being independent.

I admit to being curious what exactly you mean by that, and how you are qualifying it

TCC could get up to 316, at least if I read the Grandfather Clause well. There once was a small country called Neutral-Moresnet, at the point where the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany are bordering eachother. (wouterrr can reach that in 30 minutes by bike, if he wanted to)

They could even add, regions like Flandres, Catalunya, Andalusia etc.

Vatican City is not regarded as a country by the EU, and therefor the pope is not regarded as a polital leader, but as a religious leader instead.

I have been looking at that tcc site a long time ago, I think they are plain stupid and a bunch of old american people who don't even have the slightest clue about things. Rhodes a specific country....LOL. Every island could be one than. Their criteria really s*ck, but of course all countries fit into the criteria obviously.

Gelli...I know independent is a really widely used term. Actually, for me it's just alle UN members plus just a couple more, like Vatican City. Actually, no country is independent if you look upon it somehow, and again, every none independent country could be called independent in some ways as well.
But basically, when people ask me how many countries there are on this planet I say 194. That's actually the most widely used right know, although of course you can debate about it as well I know;)
