We're four college kids looking to go to Brugge or Ghent to kick back, relax, walk around, and enjoy the beautiful architecture and canals for THREE days.

I hear Brugge is a must see.

I also hear Ghent is a lot less touristy, and is more lively.

We don't care so much for the liveliness.

Which city would be more serene? Brugge because it's smaller, more beautiful, and because it's not as lively as Ghent?

Or Ghent because it has a lot less tourists and slightly more to do?

Also, which is cheaper? :-P

Hi! I have heard that they're so close to eachother!! You can go both of them..

select the hostel that you much like in one of them.. and make daily trips to other.. ;)

It's only 50 kilometers between Ghent and Brugge, so you might want to base yourself in Ghent and do a day trip to Brugge because it's smaller and easier to see in one day.
Ghent is a little less touristy, mainly it feels like it because it's spread out more.
Personally I found Brugge much more beautiful. Ghent isn't restored everywhere the way Brugge is. Of course, that could add to the experience as well of course, because Ghent might feel more natural.

Hello Eddieg

I have never been in Ghent, but I can recommend Brugge. I have been there twice. I do not think it was particularly expensive.

I've never been to Ghent, so my opinion is a bit biased - but Brugge is a must-see. Absolutely stunning place, and a great little city to walk around in and simply enjoy. It was the hightlight of my trip, and we were only there a day.

I've not been to Ghent, but I have been to Brugge and it does indeed live up to its reputation of beauty, etc.

I am born in Ghent and grew up in that city, so I am a bit biased. However, I know Bruges well also. I would prefer Ghent myself because it has more a 'big city' feeling: very vibrant, a lot of cultural and shopping activities, busier. Of course this is a personal preference. Both cities have the lovely old buildings, and the canals. But Ghent is a bigger and more vibrant city, Bruges is more quiet.

I would go for Ghent, but knowing that city inside out, I may be a bit biased.

I have to admit though: I like Brussels even better than my native city. Brussels is the only truly open-minded city in Belgium where everything goes. Of course, if you want old buildings and canals, then stick to Ghent or Bruges, both will please you a lot.

I haven't got a clue what there is to see, apart from the formule 1 circuit and the place to buy pure mineral water.
