I need to find a Carabeean destination as a junction between travelling from Havana-Miami. What do you recommend?
Which Carbeean island is the most commercialized? What is the biggest city in the Carabeean?
Which island is the most authentic? What destination is happening for nightlife?
Where are the virgin beaches?
As I posted in your other thread, Cancun is probably the easiest mid-point destination. It has a very large airport with lots of flights to both Cuba and Miami. It has a very active nightlife, though it tends towards the younger crowd, with all-you-can-drink, open all night bars. It's kind of like Vegas, in my mind, fun for a few days, but not the kind of place you want to spend a whole week. From Cancun, it's a short drive down to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum, either of which are much less developed than Cancun (but still developed enough to offer decent restaurants and good night life). Of course, Mexico isn't really an island, so it doesn't really match your initial request...
For islands, I have only been to Cuba and Dominican Republic. Frankly, after being in Cuba, Domincian Republic was a bit of a let down. It's similar to Cuba, but Santo Domingo is no Havana in historical or cultural significance, and the beaches in Punta Cana were not as nice as Varadero.
I have heard good things about Dominica - very natural with some amazing hiking in the mountains.
Agree with GregW,
I heard amazing things about Dominica and Martinique and Guadeloupe as well. Also St. Lucia should be nice.
For a totally different experience, try to visit Montserrat, the island which was struck by a volcano eruption. Plymouth, the former capital, was destroyed. You can take a boat from Antigua.
One of the bigger cities should be Santo Domingo, or maybe Kingston on Jamaica.
Aruba is probably the worst of the worst, americans and dutch people on a boring island and big commerce!
