any advice would be great!

what are you talking about?

all uk contracts are 12-24 months long, how can that be justified in a 7 week travelling trip? you will lose out big time! get yourself a pay as you go sim card!

Dont bother with a contract. The vodafone pay as you go ones are dirt cheap and available pretty much everywhere. Take your uk phone with you (or you can buy a semi decent one for $70) and you will be sorted. You can top up $49 a month a you get $230 worth of credit (for text etc) and 20 mins of international call time. What we used to do is buy a calling card, use your mobile to call the local access number on the card and you can then call home for ages.. We now use a certain web based phone service (mods- can i say its name?)well, it lets you call other users on their computers for free and when you call a landline in the uk, its only 2.7 cents a minute.. not bad.
