We join the team... Same plan for us, a family of four (2 kids, age 3 and 6). The plan is to travel from Cairs to Sydney in about 8-9 weeks starting end of nov beginning of dec, so we think we have plenty of time. A camper and cabin/house combination is what we hope for.
There are several questions we have: Will it be crowded, especially the campsites, as it is holiday season in australia? Are beaches usable between Cairs and Brisbane because of the jellyfish? What would be the best place to stay for two or three (or four?) weeks, preferably a beach type of place?
@Barbara: sollen wir uns einmal kurzschliessen in D?

Thanks for any help!

Kai

For a start your currency is going to be worth a bit to the Australian dollar so that is a big plus for a start. You can bus it from Cairns down the coast to Sydney but depending on how long you have for your trip you might want to stop off at Townsville after Cairns then Airlie Beach (Whitsundays) which is staggeringly beautiful and dotted with islands and pristine sea. On down to Brisbane. Then the Gold Coast then into NSW and possible stops at Coffs Harbour and then Port Macquarie before hitting Sydney. You can look these places up on Internet by going into Google Australia. Plenty of accomodation and as I said you money will go far. As you head out from Cairns down Coast it will get cooler but not noticeably so until Sydney but still very nice weather. If you are going in November on then only bring summer clothes but a hat and sunblock because our sun is very strong. Our big school holidays after from mid December through to the end of January to accomodation then will be at an absolute premium. Camping grounds are very good and professional but Australia now has excellent backpacker facilities if you want to try the hostels. Resorts and Motels everywhere down Coast but of course more expensive. Food will not be expensive by your standards nor drink and there are German restuarants around the place but of course you will want to try the local fare. Anything else I can help with let me know. :)

Hi Buckra,
thanx a lot for your help.
What about the jellyfish - kids on a beach that cannot go in the water can be kind of hard to bear...
And the weather? We want to start around nov 25th. Since we hear that the weather can be kind of unstable (rainy) in the north at the time, we plan to start in Cairns and head south from there. Or should we go even further north first? Since we have a few weeks, we would like to go down to Sydney an maybe return to a nice place to stay for another two or there weeks and relax. Any suggestion for such a place (with kids) on a beach or so?
Thanx again

Kai
