Wow... now this is what I joined this forum for!!

I am in London at the moment and I've been kinda amsterdam, france, uk a bit, all really goddamn upper middle class and samey...

I've been thinking about romania for a while now, and perhaps greece and turkey?

Plane fares seem to be like 200 quid return, I was thinking perhaps of catching a plane to Turkey, then making my way up through greece and bulgaria into romania, then fly back from romania to london.

Sound like a half-reasonable idea?

I'm sick of bloody rich countries already!!

What is it like actually going to romania? Accomodation okay? Cheap-ass backpacker hostels? What about transport?

Should I worry about catching STDs and getting stabbed ;)

ah yes! very affordable.

i can speak for Transylvania - Sigishoara has an Elvis Villa Hostel. a Fellow Bostonian Runs it - Nathan. he'll give a room at a great price and take u out to the local bars n clubs.

When i first arrived - the hostel was not well posted at the trainstation so i jumped along with a local who was offering a bed at his house. great price - actually cheaper than the hostel - BUT you will be alone and teh bathroom is in the backyard.

my second night ran into the hostel staff at a bar and they gave me a bed for cheap as well. and they had a party that nite when i met all the locals. Actually the Accomadation is the most expensive thing in town.

Transport! ha! its what makes Eastern Europe stil an adventure - Trains run delayed. Mine got stuck in a snow storm in the Carpathians at night. They are often crowded with Gypsies lookin for money so watch ur pockets. be careful in general at Trainstations - stabbed.. no - just watch out for pickpocketers and theives - mostly the gypys children.

have fun!

Thanks for the replies :) As a matter of fact travelling to Romania is really cheap. Nope you don’t have anything to worry about but still don’t exchange money whit people in the streets and be careful for pick-pockets and scammers especially in Bucharest.
A meal doesn’t cost more that 10$, transport is also cheap( I preferred the train) and they actually have some good hostels. Besides large cities the accommodation in hotels is about 50 $ or smth like that. Here is something worth to check – , from places descriptions to trip planners.

So what kind of price would I be looking at for the trains and accomodation (in whatever currency suits ya)?

Is there some kind of train pass I can get that will take me all through turkey to Bucharest?

I have ABSOLTELY nothing against sleepin on the floor and peeing in a bucket, I'm all for the cheap living y'know? :)

Anca! that website is great! - i love it!
I recall the hostels were about 8-10 USD a night - the house i stayed at about 5. crazy!

trains were cheap too - i dont recall though.
Bucharest to Istanbul is teh old Orient Express! .... im sure its a decent price - but i have not taken it.

peeing in a bucket is the best! the only way to see the world!
LOL - ahhhh i luv the east!

I think that is a train Iterrail that passes trough all Europe. But I don't know how much it costs.

god this forum moves quick!
And yeah heheh.. peeing in a bucket, the only way!

And WOW that's cheap accommodation!!! gads!

So what other expenses would I be looking at apart from food/acoomodation trains?

Actually - any idea on the train fares?

Would my idea of London -- Turkey -- greece -- bulgaria -- romania -- London be plausable?

God, I'm getting all excited about this! hehehehe! :D

What kind of daily budget would I have to set?

hmm... watch out for the romanian girls . About 30$ per day I think is more that enough.
