Ok now we've decided to do 3 weeks car rental in Spain. Anyone recommend any cheap reliable companies? Any tips on things to watch out for when renting a car in Spain? How is parking when staying in hostels? I know in NZ parking costs are ridiculous in the cities. Also what is the cost of petrol? Any other bits on info on car rental would be much appreciated!!! :)

Petrolprices are around 90 eurocents for diesel and 1,05 euro for 98 lead free (95 lead free is about 95 cents).
I really would advice to stick with the regular car agencies like budget, avis, hertz etc. They might be a bit more expensive but they are more reliable than the cheaper ones.
Last year there had been a survey around popular countries in southern Europe and there were lots of cars who were just bad, especially in Turkey, Portugal and Spain.

You're going to Carcassone, aren't you?

Keep in mind that in the part of Spain you'll be in, if you take fast roads, motorways gotta be the english word, you'll have to Spain, and they are not what I'd call cheap. I haven't found the prices on their website, but at least u can see what roads they are: http://www.aseta.es/

Same thing goes for the south of France. You can check prices on "Autoroutes du Sud de la France" website: http://www.asf.fr/

If you're crossing the border from figueres, well, from Le bolou, i suggest you take the motorway, you will never make it if you take the national road.
and if you wanna do some sightseeing in the way to France go from Figueres to a town called Llançà. just follow the road from Llançà to France, it's one of the best mediterranean landscapes I've ever seen.
