If you want budget I would highly recommend Base Backpackers. They have several accross New Zealand. I stayed at the one in Wellington and Christchurch and I would recommend them to all. Check it out. http://www.basebackpackers.com/christchurch.htm

Christchurch central YHA is clean with good facilities, and is in a good location. I spent a few nights there and enjoyed it. its not really a party place though if that's the kind of thing you are looking for.

We stayed at Thomas's Hotel, Phone 64 3 379 9536 Fax 64 3 379 9556 36 Hereford Street, Christchurch, New Zealand

Well placed for walking distance to all the sites - opposite the Arts Musuem, rooms cost around NZ$30 for a bed in a shared dorm or you can have a private room if you wish, there are private facilities, kitchen, laundry etc.

My parents and I stayed at the Scenic Circle Cotswold which was really comfy, has a nice big courtyard if you have a car and is on the main drag into the city.

Very reasonable. :)

Hi Tommi,

i have stayed in both the Excelsior and YHA Christchurch. As perviously mentioned the YHA is very clean and comfortable but hosts a very small kitchen and lack of utensils within. The excelsior is an older hostel but is a much more party atmosphere, toilets and showers did let this place down tho.

Both are centrally located, if u want a good nights sleep then YHA. If you want a party then Excelsior.

hope this could be of help

Andy

xxpacerxx: I think you stayed at Rolleston House, the other YHA in Christchurch (they have two) - the City Central YHA that bex mentioned has two rather large kitchens, both with plenty of utensils. (Although sometimes you have to look in the other kitchen to find a corkscrew.) :)

I would highly recommend Foley Towers. It's a great hostel with really friendly staff, set-up so that it's easy to meet people. I'd recommend paying the extra dollar to get one of the garden rooms that you split with 2 others. Also it's not a typical place like Base Backpackers that tend to attract a crowd entirely oriented on partying. Well, that's my two cents.

Hi tommi81

There are lots of different hostels in Christchurch and I really enjoyed Base.

But, my strongest poece of advice is, what ever you so, don't stay at Charlie B's! It's smelly and dark and pooey!!

New Zealand is the best place in the world - enjoy!
