It's my best friends birthday on Thursday and I'm wondering what to give her, I have no ideas!! So my question is this:
What is the best gift you have ever been given?
Maybe I can get some ideas from you...

I don't know what is my best gift/present ever. But a book token is always good for me (but one that has a little more then 5US$). Sounds boring but many people like it (if they like readig so to speak). Otherwise a bottle of Vodka will do as well

Best friends are tough.... I recently bought a statue made by an artist from Zimbabwe for my wife, but that was also because I knew she wanted something 'like it' for in the house....

One of the best presents I've ever received was an evening out at a thai restaurant followed by a few nice drinks in a sky bar (you know, the fancy type at the top of a building).... still have fond memories of that bd!

I always like home-made things. My best friend (who's a graphic artist) made me a scrapbook based on Beatles' songs. She found funny pics of all of us and decorated the pages with song titles that matched. The cover of the album was Sergent Pepper with Neal and my faces. Brilliant!

I don't think you want to spend the money that "my best gift ever" actually cost Beerman - 11 days in Antigua.

I collect a number of things - windchimes, shells, turtle figurines and a few other things. If your friend has any type of collections, something you think would go well with what she already has usually is well received. I love the unique windchimes people find for me. I also love the shells (any size) that someone found themselves or in a shop that they thought I would like.

Books work well too - especially if there's an "antique" bookstore near you. You can find some very cool "hidden gems" for very little money.

If she is one of your closest friends, pictures of the two of you together placed in unique frames is a nice idea. I take plain wooden frames and paint them to incorporate the theme of the picture. (Ie: I gave friends pics from our first meeting in Jamaica and painted the frames in Caribbean style. It took little time and they loved them.) Barring decorating them yourself, there are so many unusual frames available these days, something would look great with the pics.

As a treat for all our birthdays my friends & l spend a day at a spa yesterday having treatments, flopping about in the pool, then for food & drinks afterwards. It was great to spend that time together and we had such a laugh!

Based on this answer I conclude that you don't travel that much, Purdy. Or you are just filthy rich;)....

I admit lm not a backpacker traveller - but so what - this site isnt just for those who are on a budget! I work hard to enjoy a luxury now and again! I thought spending a day with friends doing something together was great - not simply spending cash but quality time too!
