Personally, I think the continue threads are boring, so I avoid them. But I dont see why they should be deleted, if others like them.;)

If there are so many continue threads, why not make a special forum, for them?

But, as we all know by now - TP is not a democracy.

I agree. Just delete new ones that are started and refrain from posting in them if they bother. It's off topic, the whole point of that entire forum is to have off topic postings. I stopped looking at that forum several years ago I think .... also because it doesn't show in the RSS feed for all threads in the forum though .

I guess my biggest "concern" is, delete one and then another and another and where does someone finally draw the line on what is a continue thread? I play in a few of them, but haven't played the word association ones in quite some time. Granted, it is Off Topic, but would it not set a precident? A few people think this one is boring so delete it. A few others think that one is boring so it should go. (Doing so will not help anyone figure out their "real" post count anyway, which was the basis of this thread. Eliminating OT completely would do that. )

The best ways to make them disappear is to ignore them and post other topics that will generate discussions. The continue threads also tend to be the ones that new members start with because it's quick, easy and they "get their feet wet" in OT. They may be off-putting to regular/older members but they do attract newer ones. (Ahila and Herr Bert are good examples.)

OT is always going to be a bit daunting at first for someone because there is a core group which plays there daily. The nice thing - that core group changes and expands as members decide to post once, then twice, etc.

Isa now steps down from the soapbox and wanders off to play somewhere else...

To be quite honest, I thought Hien was joking when he originally suggested it (and I still kind of think he is, but not sure now based on the reactions ). We've never done this for exactly the reasons you point out Isadora (plus, if done in OT, why not in GT etc.). I wouldn't want to base it too much on personal motivations if we ever need to delete/remove from sight massive amounts of threads. Would just do an automatic 'not active in past year = removed' type of query instead. At least there's no fine line then :)

I am taking for granted that Hien is joking also. But it dawned on me yesterday afternoon that other members may think it's a serious consideration without thinking of the ramifications such deletions could evoke. Apologies for stirring the pot (possibly) un-necessarily, but threw my 2 cents in anyway. ;)

How could we possibly joke about something so serious and dear to the hearts of certain members [i.e. more or less anybody with a post count above 3000]

The continue threads also tend to be the ones that new members start with because it's quick, easy and they "get their feet wet" in OT.

Agree, although part of the opposite argument also works there - if all the posts they see when they enter OT are continue type ones, then they are the ones which will be replied to. (heck, some were started by Wocca who had already been banned before i went away almost 2years ago!)

Actually, it would have interesting to see which names people come up with (without looking in the atlas)

I know what your saying, but the ease of Google/wikipedia/Internet in general etc make it easy for people to come up with obscure places/names without having ever heard of them [I have no problem with people doing that in threads like this, but it would be really interesting to see what people would come up with without any reference materials - which can't really happen without us all being together in a real life pub setting, for example]

(Ahila and Herr Bert are good examples.)

And others. Has Mikey ever been seen outside of OT?!

Sigh... Now, where do I start? From the top, of course.

Well, Sam got it right about me joking about the whole idea when I first posted. It was (at that time) just a silly suggestion to Michael so that he could see a clearer representation of the post count minus off-topic posts (maybe not all, but a big bulk of it). It is, after all, the quickest and simplest solution and we don't have to wait for Sam to come up with a solution for what Michael requested.

If you see the development of the thread, it was only after the replies from Sander, Phil, and Rich that got me into it (yes, I'm blaming it on you guys ). Phil knew about what happened between you-know-who and me. Rich on the other hand, has some strong points in his argument and that really brought up to light what I have been brushing aside all this while. As for Sander, well, it's for the interest of science!

Out of the many replies, I am only serious in two of them. The first one is my reply to Rich. The second one is obviously the comment where I asked about the effect of the deletions. I might not make myself clear enough in the reply, but my intention is to see what you guys really think about my proposal IF we really were to go ahead with it, since I was only jokingly proposing it at first.

Hien, u are getting to like that delete button a bit too much.;)

Mel, I think your comment has been influenced by my recent deletions of over 20 posts in the Beautiful Women thread in OT. And I think others have the same thought about me. Mind you, based on the rules set out, that has to be done, and someone's got to do the dirty job, and I just happened to be the one. One thing I want to tell you is that moderating is not as easy as it seems, and having the entire forums watching whatever you do doesn't help either. I'm not complaining though, I'm a happy (and mad, as some would say) moderator here.

But, do as you wish. It's nice to know that only one side is going to be considered - very democrat. But, as we all know by now - TP is not a democracy.

I want to set it straight that the issue about democracy in this matter should not be questioned at all, because my reply was done in a jokingly manner.

Sam, do you mean that any duplicate continue threads can be removed? As you can see, there are many duplicates of the same one, as every now and then, someone will start to "breed" the continue threads, or make a slight change in the title or the detail and make another game out of it. Word association have so many offsprings and I always wonder why they couldn't just continue with the existing one. Continue with four words has an upgraded version that can support two more words. The end letter game has many varieties too. But I think this one's not as bad as the others as it covers different topics - travel gear, geography. So, is it okay to delete the duplicates?

Yes, I see & at the end of your comments. ;)

I know that with the word association threads, the second was started because Wocca thought the first took too long to load. The third was started because Anne accidentally hit "start new thread" instead of reply. Why Alicja started the fourth is anyone's guess. The same holds true with the Six-word thread started by Zeisha - anyone's guess.

I realize Hien is joking about deleting the duplicates, but would it be feasible to inactivate the duplicates since they do seem to be a bone of contention? It would leave some continue threads alive, but narrow the field a bit. Rich does have a point, which I didn't thoroughly consider, people post in the threads that they see on the first page. (Sorry, I'm one that actually checks pages 2 and 3 and 4 for threads I find interesting but I'm just strange that way, I know.)

Anyway, that's my next 2 cents worth thrown in. At this rate, I'll be completely broke by Saturday.
