Dear Echin,

I would highly advise to have a UK bank account set up before you arrive - hsbc can do this internationally i am told. When I arrived, I paid a company £30 to set me up with one. It is essential that you have one as it is impossible to get a rental place without one - yet impossible to get an account once you arrive without a permanant address - and you have to show proof of that address inthe form of a utility bill , lease, or bank statement. If you go through a pay company like I did - you will not need the proof but you still need to give a residential address and contact info - so hotel will not work. Also farm out your cv to as many placement agencies as possible - They will tell you that you will only get contract (temp) work on a working holiday visa - thats ok if you intend to travel and if not - i have found that the companies will typically offer you a permanent visa sponsored position after you have been there for a bit as an hourly employee - they just want to test you out - It is really hard for a UK employer to fire you once you are in permanent employ and many will sponsor for an extended visa. Travelling has been fantastic and easy and once i started to eard GBP - so cheap - cheaper than staying in london for the weekend! My cash went really quicky in the beginning though - that was a bit rough. figure out where you are staying and then seek a job - fast - england is expensive. They also like paperwork here so be sure to bring any certifications and education levels that you have achieved as well as letters of referral from past employers that talk about your resposibilities and character.
All the best;)

Hi everyone,

my friend and I have been in London for 2 weeks plus.
Managed to opened a bank account with Barclays and went for the national insurance interview. Also, got a part-time job with Mc Donald.
Any clue on the average time needed to get a full time job after register with a recruitment agency?
will the holidaymakers having some sort of gathering or meeting to share each others experience here? if so, I am most delighted to join.

cheers,
Chai Chin

:) Hi I'm Lydia and im interested in submitting my application for the WHM visa in KL in the coming weeks. This thread has been a real source of information for me but i'd really appreciate it if any of you could help with some of my questions below. Some may seem a bit silly but im wondering if it makes a difference with my application.

1. Did any of you write or print your name at the bottom of the WHM Questionnaire form and does it make a difference either way?If you need to print it, any ideas how ? (as im completely clueless when it comes to IT)

2. I have had previous passports before but no longer have them with me as they were cut up by immigration when i returned them. Is it an absolute neccesity and will they accept my explanation?

3. Will my May payslip suffice as evidence of income and employment. I'm with HSBC?

4. I have yet to confirm my accomodation plans. How do i provide evidence of that? I am considering staying with a relative, will i need to show proof in writing or will an address suffice.

Hope you guys will be able to help. thanks in advance..

  1. NO. I HANDWRITTEN EVERYTHING WITH BLACK INK.

2. I have had previous passports before but no longer have them with me as they were cut up by immigration when i returned them. Is it an absolute neccesity and will they accept my explanation?

  1. I HAD MY OLD PASSPORTS WITH ME. U MAY CHECK OTHER MORE PEOPLE. IF THERE ARE MANY OTHER PPL'S PASSPORTS NOT BEING RETURNED BY THE IMMIGRATION, I GUESS THEY WOULD ACCEPT. A FRIEND OF MINE LOST HER OLD PASSPORTS WHILE MOVING HOUSE, SO SHE MADE A POLICE REPORT AND SHOE THE POLICE REPORT TO THE VISA CENTRE.

3. Will my May payslip suffice as evidence of income and employment. I'm with HSBC?

  1. PROVIDE THEM YOUR LATEST 3 MONTHS BANK STATEMENT AND SALARY SLIP.

4. I have yet to confirm my accomodation plans. How do i provide evidence of that? I am considering staying with a relative, will i need to show proof in writing or will an address suffice.

  1. BETTER TO HAVE A LETTER FROM YOUR RELATIVE SAYING YOU CAN STAY WITH THEM.

GOOD LUCK.

Hi there,

I'm sorry afraid i have no clue about that. The embassy of your maid's origin country might be the best option. Either that, maybe you might want to post your question to a new thread, because your question is not related to UK work hoildays so people might actually not notice. Maybe

Hi J,

Looking at your citizenship in your profile, I'm assuming that you're in the Philippines now. You may check the website of the British Embassy, Manila for more detailed info regarding visa application in your area.

Hope that helps.
