As part of my trip through China in Mar/Apr, I've got about 5-6 days to get from Guilin to Beijing, by rail. Any suggestions on where to stop along the way?

You could travel across to Shanghai which took me 29 hours, then you head upto Beijing from there which is another overnight train. That would give you a couple of nights in Shanghai. Or you could head up to Xi'an, then onto Beijing and see the Terracotta Soldiers. Or if you were wanting to squeeze even more in you could go Guilin, Shanghai, Xi'an then Beijing, though you would be pushing it for time as that is 3 overnight trains.

The train from Shanghai to beijing was alot more modern. It was cleaner, more comfortable, food was served to you in your booths and the toilets were westernised, instead of a hole in the floor down to the track.

Hope you sort it out.......
